LEIPZIG. (Ceto) paradox: Hurricane Irene largely spares refineries and oil ports on the U.S. East Coast. A shortage, at least in North America is averted. But instead of decreasing it hails rising oil prices. Both North Sea oil (Brent) and U.S. light crude (WTI) won yesterday around 1.50 U.S. dollars. Both defended the plus reference varieties in morning trade, and thus keep the level of mid-August, when they rallied again after the first crash.
At this recent period of high prices Irene has also "guilty". For the quotations not followed once more the fundamental situation - say, the oil world as it is, but the stock markets, ie the world as Will and Idea. And precisely because of those who went to Irene, in particular the insurance stocks that had fallen before the whirlwind.
The downward trend, estimated by some analysts as essential, is, at least for the time being, been averted. Heating oil buyers in Germany have to reckon with because of surcharges. Thanks to a stronger euro, however, these should be mild.
